MEADVILLE — Richard E. Smith, 84, of Meadville, died Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, at Meadville Medical Center.

Born Feb. 19, 1929, in Meadville, he was a son of George and Agnes Baird Smith. He married Mary Ann Grippe, who preceded him in death, and subsequently married Virginia Bell on Feb. 19, 1983, and she survives.

He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War and after returning from the war, he worked at the former Talon Inc.

He was an avid bear and deer hunter, spending many seasons at the Marshburg Hunting Club.

Richard was a 32 degree Mason and a member of the Meadville Masonic Lodge and the Zem Zem Shriners in Erie. He was also a member of the Meadville Club and the Meadville Veterans of Foreign Wars.

In addition to his wife of 30 years, he is survived by a son, Richard J. Smith and his wife, Debbie, of Cambridge Springs; two daughters, Jeanne Smith of Murpheesboro, Tenn., and Kimberly Smith of Cambridge Springs, and a stepson, Donald DuPont Jr. of Meadville; five granddaughters, Jess Pelton and her husband, Scott, Erica Dies and her husband, Rod, Amy and Jill Smith and Emily Smith; great-granddaughters, Kylee and Karlee Dies and Ashley and Kara Slayton, and a stepgreat-grandson, Tyler Pelton; a brother, Robert Smith and his wife, Kay, of Meadville; a sister, Patricia Tracy of Meadville; several nieces and nephews; and many good friends.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; and a daughter, Susan Smith.

Friends will be received at Dickson Family Funeral Home Inc., 123 S. Franklin St., Cochranton, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Monday from the funeral home, with the Rev. David Brumagin officiating.

Interment will be in Peters Cemetery, with military honors conducted by Cochranton American Legion.

The family ask that memorials be made to Shriners Children’s Hospital, 1645 W. Eighth St. Erie, Pa. 16505.
