John Joseph Blankfield, beloved husband and father, 85, of Cochranton died Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at Crawford County Hospice Marquette House.
Born Aug. 26, 1928, in Philadelphia, he was a son of William H and Eleanor Magee Blankfield. He met his wife, Elsie Rickard, in April 1951 and they were married on Oct. 20, 1951.
At 13 he survived Bulbar Polio and Scarlett Fever. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1945 and proudly served until 1966. After retiring from the Navy he moved his family to Cochranton, where he began working for the Erie Lackawanna/Conrail Railroad until 1981. He later worked for the oil industry, expediting oil drilling equipment via train all over the United States, and he retired in 1990.
He was an avid reader his entire life, enjoying science and history. He loved music and could remember all the lyrics to all the songs of his youth. Later in life, he was a member of the choir at St. Hippolyte’s Catholic Church under the direction of Dr. Paul T. Poux. He was joined in the choir by four of his daughters and his wife, Elsie. He later joined the choir at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Franklin, where he built lasting friendships.
John was a friend to all and greatly loved by his family. He will be remembered for his good humor, friendship and his love of God, life and the world around him.
He is survived by his wife, Elsie, of 62 years; five daughters, Bonaventure Suzanna Maria Greathouse and her husband, Daniel Joe, of Union City, Eileen Ian Mantz and her husband, William C., of Cochranton, Kathleen Shawn Herrick and her fiancé, Dale S. Sihrer, of Fredricksburg, Va.,, Amy Louis Mercier and her husband, Paul II, of Guys Mills and Mary Ellen Everett and her husband, Charles, of Meadville; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, William H. Blankfield II and Richard Blankfield.
Friends will be received at Dickson Family Funeral Home Inc., 123 S. Franklin St., Cochranton, on Thursday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A scripture service will be held Thursday at 8:45 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Hippolyte’s Catholic Church in Frenchtown, with Monsignor John Herbine of St. Patrick’s Church in Franklin and Father Daniel Prez of St. Hippolyte’s as celebrants.
Interment will be in St. Hippolyte’s Cemetery.
