Charles W. Sernik Jr.

CLARKS MILLS — Charles W. Sernik Jr., 67, of Clarks Mills, passed away on Friday, Sept. 20, 2013, at Hospice of the Valley Hospice House, Poland, Ohio, following a courageous battle with cancer. 

He was born on Aug. 1, 1946, a son of the late Charles W. and Helen T. (Potase) Sernik Sr. 

On Oct. 24, 1969, he married the former Linda S. Furey, who survives.

Chuck had been employed by PPG Industries Plant No. 8 for 39 years, having retired in 2011. He possessed a strong work ethic, having begun working at the age of 12 and beginning full-time employment while attending high school. 

He had served as a sergeant with the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War as a jet aircraft mechanic, during which he had received the National Defense Service Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal.

He was a member of Clarks Mills United Methodist Church. He was a member of Sheakleyville Community Volunteer Fire Department where he had served as the fire police captain.

Chuck was very family-oriented, having enjoyed participating in the events and activities of his children and grandchildren. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed working with wood.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Charles J. Sernik and his wife, Betty; a daughter, Traci Cropp and her husband, Gary; a brother, David A. Sernik and his wife, Lisa; two sisters, Beverly Lockwood and her husband, Richard, and Rose Johnson; and four grandchildren, Kody Cropp, Keane Cropp, Karson Cropp and Kennedy Cropp.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A gathering to celebrate and remember the life of Chuck Sernik will be held at Clarks Mills United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 3813 Hadley Road, Clarks Mills, on Oct. 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. At 3:30 p.m., a time of prayer by the Rev. Dayton Mix, pastor of Clarks Mills United Methodist Church, and military honors will be accorded.
