Raymond A. Lysowski

ERIE — Raymond A. Lysowski, 94, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013.

He was born June 5, 1919, in Oil City, a son of the late John and Mary Krzys Lysowski.

Ray was a graduate of Meadville High School and received a degree in mathematics from Allegheny College. A talented athlete, Ray lettered in football in both high school and college.

In 1960 he moved with his family from Meadville to Erie. In 1983 he retired from Erie’s General Electric, where he had worked as an industrial engineer.

During World War II he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps and belonged to a crew that flew in 50 combat bomber missions. At discharge, he received the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters and the European African Middle Eastern service medal with four Bronze Stars. Ray was very patriotic and proud to be an American, and his family noted the significance in regards to his date of death, 9/11.

Ray was an avid golfer and tennis player. He was a Silver Life Master in contract bridge, having belonged to the Erie Bridge Center.

On Nov. 3, 1951, he married the love of his life, his beloved wife, Grace Galle Lysowski. They were married for 62 years until Grace’s death 18 days ago on Aug. 24, 2013.

Besides his wife, Grace, Ray was preceded in death by four sisters, Helen Zern, Frances Smith, Victoria Waid and Kay Olosky; along with two brothers, Anthony and Joseph Lysowski.

Ray is survived by his children, Raylene Dill and her husband, Paul, of Erie, Joni Sansone and her husband, Tom, of Erie, and John Lysowski and his wife, Teresa, of Cranberry Township. He was the very proud grandfather of Dominic Sansone of Erie, Maria Sansone Guthartz and her husband, Josh, of Santa Monica, Calif., John (Jak) Nicholas and Megan Lysowski, all of Cranberry Township. Ray was the brother of Virginia Zimmerman of Austin, Texas; and is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends for one hour at St. Andrew Catholic Church, 1116 W. Seventh St., Erie, today from 11 a.m. until noon at which time a funeral Mass will be celebrated.

Burial will follow with a committal service being held in the chapel of St. Brigid Cemetery, Meadville, at 2:15 p.m.

Flowers are graciously declined. Memorials may be made to St. Andrew Catholic Church, 1116 W. Seventh St., Erie, Pa. 16502.

Arrangements are being handled by John J. Quinn Funeral Home, West Ninth and Liberty streets, Erie.
