GREENVILLE — Mrs. Shirley Bovard of Greenville passed away on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013, at UPMC Hamot Hospital, Erie, at 3:57 p.m. following an illness. She was 83 years old.

Mrs. Bovard was born on Sept. 19, 1929, in Stevens, Ark., to her parents, Marshall Courtney and Inez Long Courtney.

She graduated from East Fallowfield Township High School and on June 14, 1947, she married her husband, Lawrence Bovard, who preceded her in death in 1993.

She was the co-owner of the former Bovard Hardware, Atlantic, and later became postmaster of the Atlantic Post Office, retiring from that position in 1988.

In 1985, she received the U.S. Postal Service Meritorious Award for her work during the tornado disaster in Atlantic that same year.

She was a life member of Atlantic Community Church and served as an elder, a deacon and a Sunday school teacher as well as singing in the church choir.

She was a 50-plus-year member of the Atlantic Grange, of the Crawford County Pomona Grange, the Pennsylvania State Grange and National Grange Associations, the Rebekahs, and the Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of NARFE and the Republican Women’s Council of Crawford County.

Mrs. Bovard was a great supporter of her community. She volunteered at the Meadville Soup Kitchen, attended almost every local pancake breakfast for various groups and charities, and even went to visit people in nursing homes to help brighten their days. Despite being so busy with so many activities, she always put her family first and never missed a single important event of her children’s or her grandchildren’s.

Mrs. Bovard is survived by three children, Sheryl Ann Miller and her husband, Richard, of Greenville, Marsha Heath and her husband, Gary, of Girard, and Robert Bovard and his wife, Eileen, of Warren; two sisters, Wilma Ferguson and her husband, Sherm, of Hartstown, and Marion Green and her husband, Karl, of Atlantic; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and a sister, Marjorie Rigby.
