H. Duane Thompson

LINESVILLE — H. Duane Thompson, 82, of Linesville passed away on Monday, March 24, 2014, with family by his side.

He was born Aug. 27, 1931, a son of Charles and Vera Thompson. Duane had attended Richmond and Andover High School.

He was the owner operator of Duane Thompson Lumber Inc. and Thompson and Son Trucking Inc. of Linesville. He purchased his first portable sawmill in 1954, moving to the current stationary sawmill operation on West Center Road in 1978. Duane just loved to saw lumber and sing. He was known as the singing sawyer. He enjoyed music, especially Mario Lanza and Luciano Pavarotti. Duane was a tenor soloist, one year singing every Sunday in a different church.

Duane was a member of the Linesville Rotary Club, serving as president for four different terms. He held a record of 35 years of perfect attendance. You could always recognize Duane in his red and gray F150 with his Airedale and a Marsh Wheeling cigar.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Norma Jean Thompson; a son, Dale D. Thompson and his wife, Darlene, of Erie; a daughter, Kathy A. Wight and her husband, George, of Palm Harbor, Fla.; a sister, Hazel Sakuta and her husband, Mike, of Jesup, Ga.; a brother, the Rev. Dr. Garth R. Thompson of Dania, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Laura Thompson of Blue Springs, Mo.; a brother-in-law, Charles W. Racey of Ashtabula, Ohio; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephew; and his Airedale, Heidi.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Stanley, Harold and Kenneth; and three sisters, Dorothy Thompson, Joycie Heath and Vivian Buell.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Royal-Coleman Funeral Home, 6028 Route 6, Linesville.

A celebration of Duane’s life will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Joseph C. Rial officiating.

Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Andover, Ohio, where a graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Linesville Rotary Club, 5747 W. Center Road, Linesville, Pa. 16424.
