Harold (Alex) Bailey

MEADVILLE — Harold (Alex) Bailey, 89, of Meadville, passed away Tuesday, June 4, 2013, at Meadville Medical Center following complications from a massive stroke suffered on May 31, 2013.

Alex was born in Meadville on Dec. 17, 1923, to Anita Donnell and Harold LeRoy Bailey. He attended schools in Meadville, Utica, Franklin and was a graduate of Cochranton High School, class of 1942. On March 4, 1950, Alex married Anna W. Wood, who preceded him in death.

Over his lifetime, Alex was employed by the Erie Railroad, Talon, Westinghouse, American Viscose, Wolff’s Hardware and retired from GTI after 26 years in December 1989. He was the owner of Bailey’s Archery Supplies, handcrafting custom arrows and bows.

Alex was one of the founding members of the Meadville Field Archery Club, serving as treasurer. In his younger years, he participated in amateur boxing in the area. He passed his love of hunting and fishing to countless people over the years, giving them instructions in archery techniques, hunting tips and teaching them to tie flies for fishing.

Alex enjoyed wood working and feeding wild animals, both big and small, at his hunting camp. He will be remembered for his humor, quick wit, warm caring need to help people and flirting with the ladies. He was proud of his Blackfoot Indian and Irish heritage. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006 and the 3:00 McDonald’s gang.

Alex leaves behind two daughters, Nancy DeRoss of Meadville and Patti Garvin Drake of Geneva; three grandsons, William Garvin Jr. of Geneva, Lance Garvin of Conneaut Lake and his caregiver and companion, Jeff DeRoss of Meadville; and great-grandchildren, Brandon and Amanda Garvin. He also leaves behind many friends that he has touched over the years.

Preceding him in death, in addition to his parents and wife, Ann, are two brothers, George (Dick) Anthony and Clyde (Spike) Anthony; a sister, Kathy Roha; and a nephew, Dickie Anthony.

Friends and family may call today from 1 to 4 p.m. at Roofner-Collins-Warren Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 544 Chestnut St., Meadville.

Funeral service and committal will follow at 4 p.m., with Pastor Harold Ferraro of New Beginnings Church of God officiating.

Burial will take place at Stevenson Cemetery in Sheakleyville.

Memorial donations can be made in Alex’s memory to the Crawford County Humane Society, 11012 Kennedy Hill Road, Meadville, Pa. 16335; or to the Meadville Field Archers, P.O. Box 212, 15497 Inlet Road, Harmonsburg, Pa. 16422.
