CONNEAUT LAKE —
Mark E. Benecki, 66, of Conneaut Lake passed away Sunday, Oct. 27, 2013, at 10:19 p.m. at UPMC Hamot Hospital, Erie, following a long battle with lung cancer.
Mark was born Oct. 15, 1947, in Erie, a son of the late Edward Benecki and Helen Somolani Benecki. He married Margaret Ann (Molly) Magee on Sept. 27, 1969. She survives.
Mark was a 1965 graduate of Cathedral Prep and attended Gannon University.
Mark served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1969, first in the United States, then Germany and finally in Vietnam. Upon his discharge from the military, he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service in Erie as a city carrier, then Bradford as a supervisor of customer services. He then was the postmaster at Conneaut Lake, and finally Edinboro, as postmaster, retiring in 2002.
He joined the Conneaut Lake Lions Club on Sept. 1, 1985, and served as secretary from 1986 to 2009, then from 2011 until his death. He received a Lions District 14-F Leadership Medal for the 2006-07 Lions service year and a Melvin Jones Fellow award in 2013. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was a member of Our Lady Queen of the Americas Roman Catholic Church in Conneaut Lake.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Molly Benecki; two sons, Gerald Benecki, M.D., and his wife, Beth, of Silverdale, Wash., and Brandon Benecki and his wife, Kara, of Ocracoke, N.C.; three grandchildren, Aldyn Benecki, Dylan Benecki and Alexis Benecki; his stepmother, Laura Borkowski Benecki of Erie; a half sister, Ann Marie Barone and her husband, Art, of Pittsburgh; and a stepbrother, David Heinrich and his wife, Linda, of Erie. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Judi Chiaramonte and her husband, William, and Linda Ballas and her husband, Joseph, all of Erie.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Calling hours will be on Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Dickson Funeral Home & Crematory, 130 N Second Street, Conneaut Lake.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, with Father Jeffrey Lucas officiating. It was Mark’s wish to be cremated.
