Ruby Jo McFerren, 65, of 390 Chestnut St., Meadville, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at her home of natural causes.
She was born on Aug. 18, 1948, in Gilbertown, Ala., a child of Genella A. McFerren of Atmore, Ala., and Willie Sledge of Detroit.
She was a student at Meadville Area Senior High School and a graduate of Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. She worked for many years as a home health aide and licensed practical nurse. She was a frequent volunteer at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Meadville. She was an avid reader, lover of music and was well known for her generosity and free spirit.
Ruby is survived by two sons, Lee V. McFerren and his wife, Lisa, of Meadville, and Dr. Marcus A. McFerren and his wife, Miriam Gohara, of Woodbridge, Conn.; three grandchildren, Emilia R. McFerren, Amir M.G. McFerren and Marlon X. McFerren; two sisters, Emma Rose Williams of Shreveport, La., and Denise McFerren of Daphne, Ala.; a brother, William McFerren of Beaumont, Texas; her nephews, Anthony McFerren of Bellefonte, Robert Williams of Shreveport and Ernie Williams of Foley, Ala.; nieces, Delores Williams of Foley, Anzella Goodwin of Greensboro, N.C., Denise Williams of Foley, Joanne Bass of Rochester, N.Y., and Liliana Love of Rochester; and her former husband, Rodger L. Montgomery of Meadville.
In addition to her parents, Ruby was preceded in death by a sister, Willie Jo Wilkerson; and the fathers of her two sons, Malcolm D. Daniels (Marcus) and Booker T. Edwards (Lee).
Family and friends are invited to call on Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville, where a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Berta Newsome-Jones, pastor of United Faith Fellowship Church, officiating.
