Joe Charles Ledford, 71, of Meadville, passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2013, at UPMC Hamot, Erie, surrounded by his family.
Joe was born in Caldwell County, N.C., on Oct. 3, 1941, a son to the late Claude and Mollie Brotherton Ledford.
He had worked as a barber at the Congdon Hotel Barber Shop for many years and also owned the Ledford Barber Shop in Waterford before his retirement. He, along with his wife Janice, owned and operated the former Tastee Freeze and the Dairy Queen ice cream shop in Union City. He also retained, along with his barber license, his real estate license. Joe also served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1964 during the Cuban Missile Crisis, with Co. B 19th Engineer BN at Fort George Meade, Md.
Besides his parents, Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Janice Klus Ledford, in May 1998.
Survivors include a daughter, Joan Ledford of Meadville; a son, Joseph Ledford and his wife, Sheila, of Harmonsburg; a sister, Judy Ledford-Wyatt of Columbia, S.C., and a brother, Clarence Ledford and his wife, Peggy, of Woodstock, Ga.; three grandchildren, Kathryn, Justin and Kyle Ledford, all of Harmonsburg; also, sisters-in-law, Patricia Klus-Owens of Union City, Helen Perry and her husband, Tim, of New Castle; and a brother-in-law, Stan Klus of Union City.
Friends are invited to call at Robert M. Glenn Funeral Home Inc., South Main Street, Union City, on Wednesday from 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. and attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday at noon at St. Teresa Catholic Church. Monsignor John Swoger will officiate, with interment in St. Teresa Cemetery, Union City.
