Thomas Gerald Payne of Conneautville passed away on Tuesday, July 16, 2013, after a heroic battle against cancer.
Tom was born in Warren on June 19, 1951, to the late Ralph Payne and the late Margaret Holup Payne.
Tom graduated from Conneaut Valley High School in 1969 and began working for Lincoln Electric in Cleveland until 1973. In 1973 he began his career at Greenleaf Corporation at Saeger Carbide, Saegertown, until his retirement in 2010.
Tom joined the Springboro Volunteer Fire Department when he was 16 and was an active member until 1985. Tom held several offices in the SVFD, including 2nd lieutenant in 1977 to 1981, vice president in 1981, president and 3rd assistant chief in 1982, vice president and 3rd assistant chief in 1983, president and 2nd assistant chief in 1984 and 1985, and vice president in 1986. From 1986 to 2013, Tom was a social member of the SVFD.
Tom was an avid fan of the Cleveland Indians and the Cleveland Browns. He enjoyed bird watching and cooking. He cooked at many restaurants, including the Spillway Inn and Laura’s Springboro Inn.
He was involved with the Springboro Council, Elks Club and Conneautville American Legion. Tom volunteered many years on the Conneaut Valley Homecoming Committee, working in the french fry booth and as the parade chairman.
Tom enjoyed working with his father and brother, restoring houses and furniture and building projects. Tom loved to travel and go on vacations. His favorite place to visit was Las Vegas and going to casinos. Tom’s most favorite thing to do was visit with friends and family and spend time with his cat, Sydney.
Tom is survived by his wife of 33 years, Cheryl Carr Payne; his daughters, Tory Hough, her husband, Brian, and their children, Damon, Drew and Alivia Grace Hough; Amanda Payne; and Julia Dean, her husband, Seth, and their two children, Bridgett and Brooklyn; his brother, Ralph Edward and his wife, Janet; sister, Sandy and her husband, Les; and Christine Payne; his father-in-law, Gale Carr, and mother-in-law, Ruth Merritt; his aunt, Harriet Trucco; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, Tom is preceded in death by his nephew, Randy Payne.
Viewing hours will be held on Sunday from 2 to 7 p.m. at the White-Cool Funeral Home, 1405 Main St., Conneautville. The funeral will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home and officiated by Pastor Harold Ferraro, followed by a private burial.
Friends and family are invited to a dinner after the funeral at the Springboro Volunteer Fire Department.
