Dolorese J. (Dolly) Firth


SPARTANSBURG — Dolorese J. (Dolly) Firth, 82, of State Highway 77, Spartansburg, died Friday, May 17, 2013, at Marquette Hospice House, Meadville.

She was raised and educated in Spartansburg, graduating from Sparta High School in 1949. She then attended Thiel College in Greenville, graduating from there in 1953 with a bachelor of science degree in English. As a young woman, Dolly worked at Tauber Woolen Mill in Spartansburg, and in the orchards in North East. She later worked for more than 39 years with the U.S. Postal Service in Spartansburg, where she was the postmaster from 1973 until her retirement in 1992.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Spartansburg and later in Corry. She was involved with Love Inc. and the Ben Franklin Stamp Club and was a Girl Scout leader for many years. Dolly was a state editor for NAPUS, taught Driver’s Ed for Sparta High School and 55 Alive in the area, and was the editor of the annual edition of the Historic Spartansburg Sentinel. She enjoyed photography, traveling, especially to the beach, and her dogs.

In addition to her parents, Dolly was preceded in death on May 8, 2004, by her husband, Todd A. Firth, whom she married on June 24, 1953, in Spartansburg.

Dolly is survived by three daughters, Vicki A. Firth of Edinboro, Kristin Firth and her husband, Dr. Jay Taylor, of Chardon, Ohio, and Elizabeth J. Firth of Spartansburg and Oil City; a son, Kenneth Firth and his wife, Christine, of North East; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are invited to call at Bracken Funeral Home, 211 Mechanic St., Spartansburg, on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m. and attend the funeral service at First United Methodist Church, 650 Worth St., Corry, on Monday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Terry Snyder will officiate.

Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, Spartansburg.
