Herbert Shank Chase Jr.

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Herbert Shank Chase Jr. of Santa Monica, Calif., passed away Saturday, July 6, 2013. He lived 90 great years and died following a brief illness. A life celebration gathering was held Aug. 2 in Santa Monica to celebrate a dynamic life filled with inventive ideas and a generous spirit.

Born to Herbert Shank Chase Sr. and Hazel Noera Chase, with sister Virginia Chase Howard, he was raised in Elizabeth, N.J. His father, Herbert Shank Chase Sr., was born in 1897 and raised in Titusville. His grandfather, Herbert Adrian Chase, was born in Titusville in 1855 and his grandmother, Rose Shank Chase, was born in 1865 in Titusville as Rose Virginia Shank. Besides Herbert, they had a daughter, Margaret, born in 1895. The Chase family lived in a home located in Titusville Ward 2.

Herbert Shank Chase Jr. was born in 1923 where he attended Pingry School from first grade through 12th grade before leaving for Colgate University. After two years, he enlisted as a U.S. Marine officer and was trained in Camp Pendleton, San Diego, where he fell in love with California. After serving in the Pacific through World War II, he returned to the East Coast and finished his college at Hamilton College. He then married Elise DeRaimes Kirkland of Elizabeth in November 1948 and immediately left for California, arriving in January 1949. They lived in Malibu before settling in Santa Monica to raise their family. Herb purchased the Independent Journal newspaper where he led many crusades including the opposition to oil drilling in the Santa Monica Bay, which resulted in very restrictive offshore drilling which remains in effect today along the coast of California.

HSC Jr. believed fervently that each generation owed the next a better life. He was devoted to the Boys and Girls Club and was on the board of directors for more than 50 years. He had seven children and 15 grandchildren and was actively involved in their lives, attending every graduation, sports event and family celebration. Give him the beach, the Dodgers and his family ... he was very happy and content.

He is survived by seven children, Anne Chase-Stapleton, 62, of Samish Island, Wash., Ashley Andrews, 61, and husband Vincent of North Salem, N.Y., Herbert Shank Chase III, 56, of Pacific Palisades, Calif., Frances Workman, 55, and husband Henry Workman of Thousand Oaks, Calif., Carole Elliott, 51, and husband Glen of Palo Alto, Calif., Lory Bierschenk, 48, and husband, Kurt, of Pacific Palisades, and Paige Chase, 41, of Santa Monica; along with 15 grandchildren.

Herbert Shank Chase III will be in Titusville on Wednesday and Thursday to place the ashes of his father, HSC Jr., in the Woodlawn Cemetery Shank Mausoleum next to his parents, HSC Sr. and Hazel. HSC III attended his grandfather HSC Sr.’s funeral during the summer of 1973 in Titusville. Hazel Chase passed away at 101 and was placed in the Shank Mausoleum in June 1999.

HSC III, along with his oldest son, Michael and fiancée, Amy, will host a reception honoring his father and hoping to meet members of the Chase and Shank families and friends who would like to attend and celebrate the family history in Titusville. The reception will be held on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Bromley’s Hillhurst Bed & Breakfast, 701 N. Perry St., Titusville. You can RSVP to Herb’s email address at hchase@mshotelmanagement.com or call (310) 734-2017 and leave a message. I very much look forward to meeting those family and friends or are able to attend. Thank you.
