Harriett E. Porter

STONEBORO — Harriett E. Porter, 85, formerly of Stoneboro, “waited for this day to be united with my creator and Savior, Jesus Christ,” passed away at 2:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, 2013, in Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community after a period of failing health.

Born April 11, 1928, in Guys Mills, she was a daughter of the late Harry L. and Eleanor A. Rough Burchard.

Mrs. Porter was a graduate of Randolph School, Guys Mills.

In her early years she worked at Westinghouse of Meadville and as a school bus driver for the Union City and Jamestown (Pa.) schools. She also worked as a nurse’s aide at Andover (Ohio) Memorial Home; most of all, she loved her role as a “farmer’s wife” and loved taking care of her family as a homemaker.

She was a member of Stoneboro United Methodist Church.

She enjoyed crafts, painting, woodworking, gardening and helping others, and she also loved bluebirds.

Her husband, the Rev. William H. Porter, whom she married on Nov. 4, 1950, preceded her in death on April 6, 1995.

Survivors include a daughter, Twila Hummel and husband, David, of Venetia; two sons, Robert L. Birtciel and wife, Nancy, of Hadley, and William B. Birtciel of Crete, Ill.; a sister, Wanda Richael of Stoneboro, and three brothers, Merle Burchard, Clair Burchard and wife, Marjorie, and Bruce Burchard and wife, Nancy, all Guys Mills; 22 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; also numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a daughter, Brenda A. Jungbluth; a grandson, Noah Michael Jungbluth; two sisters, Jennie Burchard and Wilmina Jean McGinnis; and a brother, Harry Burchard Jr.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests material contributions to Lakeview Area Helping Hands, P.O. Box 145, Stoneboro, Pa. 16153; or Benevolence Fund at Wesbury, 31 N. Park Ave., Meadville, Pa. 16335

Calling Hours will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday in Scott A. Black Funeral Home, 99 Franklin St., Stoneboro.

The funeral and committal Service will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Stoneboro United Methodist Church, 32 Lake St., Stoneboro, with the Rev. Earl R. Dykes, associate pastor, Methodists United In Faith, officiating.

Interment will be in Chapinville Cemetery, Rockdale Township.
