June L. Houghtling McEldowney

ELYRIA, Ohio — June L. Houghtling McEldowney, 87, of Elyria, Ohio, and formerly of Corry, passed away on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, in the loving care of the staff at Corry Manor.

June was born Aug. 5, 1926, in Warren, Ohio, to the late Lyle and Vena Parker Houghtling.

When she was a young child, her family moved to Leavittsburg, Ohio, where she attended elementary school. Her father’s job on the railroad brought the family to Corry in the early 1940s. She attended Corry High School and worked at Hoenes’ Confectionery.

She married Frederick McEldowney on Jan. 28, 1944, and began her married life in Corry. For many years, she was a candy maker for Ritz Candies.

When her children were young, June was involved with the Parent Teacher Association and the Girl Scouts of America and belonged to many local bowling leagues.

Her family will remember “Nana” surrounded by her crocheting, knitting, ceramics and various other crafts. In addition to crafts, June enjoyed movies, playing cards, making candy, decorating cakes, camp fires, attending her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s sporting events and taking her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to amusement parks and to Chuck E. Cheese. She took pride in decorating her home for the holidays.

In her lifetime, June had the opportunity to vacation all over the United States, Germany and Japan. Her life centered around her children and grandchildren.

She attended Elyria Presbyterian Church and over the years had made hundreds of crocheted and knitted items for the church’s mission projects.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant daughter, Nancy; a sister, JoAnn Wharton; and three brothers, Lyle “Bob,” John and Charles “Chuck” Houghtling. She was also preceded by three grandchildren, Louise Fox, Dennis and Jason McEldowney.

June was the adored mother of Daniel McEldowney (Pat), Dona Fox (David), Linda Sue Collins, Jon McEldowney (Sandy) and Judy Blakeslee. She considered Mary Lou Burnside her adopted daughter. She was beloved by her grandchildren, Steve (Jennifer) and Kevin (Tracey Utegg) McEldowney, Paul Fox (Mary Gardner), Michelle (Keith) Thompson, Tarette Fuller (Justin Beattie), Jamie (Christy) McEldowney, Michael Fox, Courtney Fox, Amy (Randy) Kent, Andrew McEldowney, Jennifer and Joel (Chelsey) McEldowney. She also considered Sheli (Rich) Buga and Jeff (Maria) Burnside her adopted grandchildren. June loved her great-grandchildren and enjoyed telling others about them. Those great-grandchildren are Brandi (Pete), Nicholas (Amanda), Kira (Trevar), Kayla, Kyle, Kelsey, Colin, Erienne, J.D., Taylor, Jesse, Jillian, McKenzee, Kalvin, Caden, Ashland, Dathin, Shaelynn, Eli, Evan and Sean. In addition, because of her love for Tyler, Austin, Jeremy, Nate, Elizabeth, Lexi and Collin, she wanted to be their “Nana” too. She was adored by two great-great-grandsons, Karter and Cooper. She would have viewed not seeing her two great-great-grandchildren who will be born in 2014 an unattained blessing.

In addition to her family, special Elyria friends, Marsha Coultrip, Toni Grissinger, Peggy Resar and Peggy Kobelka brought much joy into June’s life.

Friends and family may attend calling hours at Bracken Funeral Home, 315 N. Center St., Corry, on Wednesday from 11 a.m. until the time of the service there at 1 p.m. The Rev. Larry Myers, pastor of First Presbyterian Church of Corry, will officiate.

Burial will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Corry.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Regional Home Health and Hospice, 13675 Route 6, Corry, Pa. 16407; or Polk State Hospital, 1 Lakewood Circle, Polk, Pa. 16342.
