Ralph (Lou) J. Mangino, 85, of Hunters Ridge Boulevard, Meadville, passed away Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, at Meadville Medical Center.
Ralph was born in Meadville on Jan. 9, 1928, a son of the late Frank and Lena (Trozzi) Mangino.
On Jan. 9, 1954, his 26th birthday, Ralph married Madeline Ricci; she survives.
After nearly 30 years of service, Ralph retired from the railroad where he had worked as a brakeman as well as conductor. He was also the owner of the former Dante’s Restaurant on 322, Meadville, for many years. In his earlier years, he had worked for the former Firch’s Bakery, Meadville.
A U.S. Army veteran, Ralph served his country honorably during the Korean Conflict, having spent much of his service time in Germany.
Ralph was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006 and of the Italian Civic Club. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, and following the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Being one of 10 children, Ralph loved and was very proud of his large family as well as his Italian heritage. He was a people person with a great personality. He loved to make others laugh; but his greatest love in life was his grandchildren. He cherished the times he spent with them especially when he and his wife baby-sat them for long stretches at a time. He will be sadly missed.
In addition to his wife, Madeline, of 59 years, Ralph is survived by three daughters, Lynn M. Spadacene and her husband, Joseph, and Joni Mangino Selep and her husband, Joseph, both of Pittsburgh, and Jill Mangino Brown and her husband, Darryl, of Watkinsville, Ga.; eight grandchildren, Ricci Lynn Spadacene, David Joseph Spadacene, Sara Mangino Spadacene, Justin Joseph Selep, Joseph Ralph Selep, Jordan Elizabeth Selep, Corey Michael Brown and Connor Joseph Brown; five sisters, Angie Mangino and Joan Baiera, both of Meadville, Betty Bailey and her husband, Donald, of Florida, Terry Guzzo and her husband, John, of DuBois, and Rose Frisina and her husband, Anthony, of Meadville; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by a brother, Michael Mangino; and three sisters, Florence Wildrick, Louise Surano and Josephine Cervone.
Calling hours are Monday from 2 to 7 p.m. at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville, where a Scripture service will be held at 6 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church, 1085 Water St., Meadville, at 10 a.m. Tuesday, with Father Matthew Kujawinski as celebrant.
Interment with full military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006 will take place in St. Brigid Cemetery, West Mead Township.
