Uta Anneliese Childs

GREENVILLE — Uta Anneliese Childs, 68, of 131 Hadley Road (Hempfield Township), Greenville, passed away at 9:35 a.m. Friday, April 5, 2013, at UPMC Horizon Hospital in Greenville.

She was born in Saarburg, Lothr, France, on June 2, 1944, to the late Otto and Anneliese Hoffmann Schacht while her father was serving in the German Army. She was raised in Frankfurt, Germany, where she graduated from high school. She earned her dental hygiene degree from Goethe University in Frankfur, and worked as a dental hygienist for the U.S. government in Stuttgart, Germany.

Upon getting married in 1979, she moved to Greenville and became a U.S. citizen, where she has resided ever since. For the last 10 years, she and her husband have split their home between Greenville and Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She and her husband were very community oriented and focused nationally on animal shelters. She was also very interested in Thiel College.

Uta, along with her husband, was a world traveler many times over and had a lifetime of good experiences. She held many personal relationships with political dignitaries across Pennsylvania and the country. She also earned some prestigious awards, including the Outstanding Citizen Award from the City of Los Angeles, and along with her husband, the A. Louis and Barbara Thiel Distinguished Service Award from Thiel College in February 2013, and she received an honorary doctorate from the Los Angeles College of Religion.

She was a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Greenville and had previously volunteered for the Greenville Hospital Auxiliary.

Uta is survived by her husband of 33 years, at home, Harvey Childs. They were married on Dec. 31, 1979. Also surviving are her stepson, Dr. Alan Paul Childs of Chicago; her identical twin sister, Brigitte H. Phillips of Austintown, Ohio; her sister, Ellen D. Hall and her husband, Donald, of Gladbrook, Iowa; and seven nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held Sunday from 4 to 7 p.m. and Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Osborne-Williams Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 73-75 Columbia Ave., Greenville.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1 Trinity Place on Penn Ave., Greenville with the Rev. Lee D. Penvose, pastor, officiating. There will be an hour of visitation at the church, prior to the service.

Entombment will be in the family mausoleum at Shenango Valley Cemetery, Greenville.
