Thelma J. Nielson

GUYS MILLS —

Thelma J. Nielson, 81, of Guys Mills, died Wednesday, April 4, 2013, at Crawford County Care Center, Saegertown.

She was born Dec. 5, 1931, in Johnsonburg, a daughter of the late William Roland and Grace Derr Gay. She married Ronald A. Nielson on June 5, 1954. He survives.

Thelma graduated from Johnsonburg High School and then Hamot School of Nursing as a registered nurse. She worked at Hamot until 1961 when she and her husband moved to Meadville. She began employment at the former Spencer Hospital, where she was rapidly promoted to night supervisor. She left nursing and taught herself accounting to help her husband, Ron, begin Aardvark Associates. She was his partner in all aspects of her life, working side by side in many successful business ventures including, MAPS, The Bolt Place and Raceway 7. She was affectionately known as the “Real Boss.”

Thelma and Ron were welcomed to Meadville by members of the Welcome Wagon. She then joined the organization and began greeting new families to the city, making many lifelong friends.

Thelma enjoyed reading, gardening, painting, dirt track racing and animals. She served on the PENNCREST School Board, and along with her husband established a scholarship fund in PENNCREST. She was a well respected business woman and dedicated mom, holding those around her to the same high standards and integrity that she lived by.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Ronald A. Nielson of Guys Mills; three daughters, Pam Lenigan and her husband, David, of Guys Mills, Melody Nielson of Meadville, and Stacey Tice and her husband, Dennis, of Bedford; four grandchildren; Chris Fitch, Linda Tice Monroe, Katie Tice and Ret Tice; and a great-grandchild, Mason David Monroe. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred and Carol; and two brothers, Richard and William.

The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Crawford County Care Center for their devotion and care of Thelma.

Calling hours are today from 7 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Hatheway-Tedesco Funeral Home & Crematory, 614 Baldwin St., Meadville.

The funeral service will be on Saturday at the funeral home at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Mark Rusnak, of Asera Care Hospice, officiating.

Burial will be in Lyona Cemetery.

Memorials in memory of Thelma, can be made to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 1645 W. Eighth St., Erie, Pa. 16505.
