Melvyn K. (Mel) Markle

CARLTON — Melvyn K. (Mel) Markle, 76, of Carlton, French Creek Township, passed away peacefully at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, May 16, 2013, after an extended illness.

Born May 13, 1937, in Oak Ridge, Armstrong County, he was a son of Kenneth W. and Buena L. Yarger Markle.

He attended New Bethlehem schools.

For most of his working years, he was a welder and had traveled throughout the region repairing and refurbishing railroad cars involved in train wrecks. He retired in 1998 after 13 years of service as a heavy equipment operator for Pymatuning State Park.

He was of the Methodist faith.

Mel was known for his love of motorcycles, especially the Harley Davidsons that he rode for many miles over the years. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting, especially for turkeys. He also enjoyed fishing.

Mel was an expert archer and was the winner of many state competitions for archery shooting in which he set many records which still stand today.

Most of all, he loved his family and was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be sadly missed.

He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran.

His wife of 52 years, the former Rosalie K. Shick, whom he married Oct. 21, 1960, survives at home. Also surviving are two daughters, Regina (Jeannie) Lenhart and husband, David, of Guys Mills, and Melanie B. Korinko and her companion, Ron Cochran, of Cochranton; four grandchildren, Ryan Gilliland of Carolina Beach, N.C., Breah Vetter and her husband, Justin, of Meadville, Gavyn Korinko and Landin Karns, both of Cochranton; three great-grandchildren, Connor, Maverick and Grace Lynn; two sisters, Kay Boddorf and husband, Gary, of Oak Ridge, and Shelly McGuire and husband, Barry, of Davenport, Fla.; and three brothers, Ray R. Markle and wife, Phyllis, of Polk, Bob Markle and wife, Lou, of Oak Ridge and Allen A. Markle, of East Brady.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a great-granddaughter, Harlow Vetter.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Visitation will be on May 25 from 2 to 4 p.m. in Scott A. Black Funeral Home, 99 Franklin St., Stoneboro.

Memorial service will be on May 25 at 4 p.m. in the funeral home. The family requests that those attending ride their motorcycles to the service and park in front of the funeral home on Franklin Street in Mel’s honor.
