Joe Charles Ledford, 71, of Meadville, passed away Sunday, May 5, 2013, at UPMC Hamot, Erie, surrounded by his family.
Joe was born in Caldwell County, North Carolina, Oct. 3, 1941, a son of the late Claude and Mollie Brotherton Ledford.
He had worked as a barber at the Congdon Hotel Barber Shop in Union City for many years and also owned the Ledford Barber Shop in Waterford before his retirement.
He, along with his wife, Janice, owned and operated the former Tastee Freeze and the Dairy Queen ice cream shop in Union City. Along with his barber license, he also retained his real estate license.
Joe also served in the U.S. Army from 1961 to 1964 during the Cuban Missile Crisis, with Co. B 19th Engineer Battalion at Fort George Meade, Md.
Survivors include a daughter, Joan Ledford of Meadville; a son, Joseph Ledford and his wife, Sheila, of Harmonsburg; three grandchildren, Kathryn, Justin and Kyle Ledford, all of Harmonsburg; a sister, Judy Ledford-Wyatt of Columbia, S.C.; and a brother, Clarence Ledford and his wife, Peggy, of Woodstock, Ga.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Janice, in May 1998.
Calling hours are Wednesday from 1 to 3 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Robert M. Glenn Funeral Home Inc., 62 S. Main St., Union City.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at noon at St. Teresa Catholic Church, 9 Third Ave., Union City, with Monsignor John Swoger as celebrant.
Interment will be in in St. Teresa Cemetery, Union City.
