Audie Clayton Cherry

UTICA — Audie Clayton Cherry, 55, of 404 Deckards Run Road, Utica, died peacefully at 8:02 a.m. Friday, April 5, 2013, in his home.

Born Sept. 16, 1957, in Meadville, he was a beloved son of Charles Clayton Cherry and Barbara Virginia Kline Cherry.

Audie was a 1975 graduate of Franklin High School, where he was an athletic standout, lettering in both wrestling and football. He attended Clarion University of Pennsylvania, where he wrestled on the college’s varsity team as a freshman.

He had worked for a number of years as an electrician at Joy Manufacturing Company of Franklin. He had also worked at Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Franklin, Dad’s Dog Food Company in Meadville and the former Franklin Bakery where he installed and maintained those companies’ large production machinery.

Audie was a devoted father and coached his children’s wrestling and youth flag football teams for many years at the Franklin YMCA. He also will always be fondly remembered by many of our area’s youth as a popular coach in Little League baseball. He took great pride in watching his Little Leaguers blossom in Minor League, and on into Senior League baseball where he continued his love of coaching.

He was an avid hunter and fisherman and always enjoyed working alongside his father at the family farm in Utica. He really loved being in his mother’s company and enjoyed watching movies with her, helping with her garden and having coffee together every morning. Most important to him were his children and his new granddaughter. He was never afraid to tell his children, or anyone who asked, how proud he was of them. Often, he would just send them a text or voicemail to let them know he loved them and was thinking of them. Even as his health declined, he was always willing to lend a hand to others, helping them with their electrical and mechanical issues or anything he could do for them. Audie had a very big heart, and was always making others around him smile and laugh. He was a free spirit and will be deeply missed by many.

He was of the Methodist faith.

He married his best friend, the former Dawn E. Joll, on Oct. 12, 1984, who survives.

In addition to his wife of 28 years, he is survived by his children, Jordan, Nicole and Erica Cherry, all of Franklin; and his granddaughter, Ainsleigh L. Gehret.

Also surviving are his parents, Charles Clayton Cherry and Barbara Virginia Cherry of Utica, his brother, Ricky L. Cherry and his wife, Kim, also of Utica; and by two nephews, Ethan and Aidan Sunder of Franklin; in addition to many loving extended family members and friends.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jared Clayton Cherry.

In accordance of his wishes, there was no public visitation.

Family and friends may call beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday in Cochranton Presbyterian Church, 109 S. Smith St. A memorial service in celebration of Audie’s life will be Saturday, conducted at 2 p.m. in the church, with the Rev. J. Harvey Boal, pastor, officiating.

Memorial contributions, if desired, may be directed in his name to the charity of one’s choice.

Timothy E. Hartle Funeral Home, 1328 Elk St., Franklin, is in charge of funeral arrangements. Please visit hartlefuneralhome.com for further arrangements and to leave your notes of condolence.
