Robert (Bob) J. Pfleger

SAEGERTOWN — Robert (Bob) J. Pfleger, 87, of Saegertown, passed away Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, at home.

Bob was born in Jersey City, N.J., on Sept. 11, 1926, the son of the late John W. and Ellen (Fewer) Pfleger.

On May 2, 1972, Bob married Hazel (Shawn) Bailey; she survives.

A member of St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church, Bob had previously been an active member of St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Cambridge Springs, where he served as a Eucharistic minister, taking communion to a local nursing home as well as shut-ins.

In the 1970s, Bob began his career in drug and alcohol counseling in Washington, D.C., eventually moving to the Meadville area. He retired from Meadville Medical Center, where he held the position of administrator for the Drug/Alcohol Rehabilitation Center. Following his retirement, Bob continued to lecture at Meadville Medical Center twice a month on spirituality to the patients of Stepping Stones. Additionally, he impacted many lives at the Crawford County Veterans Administration, providing support, friendship and leadership to combat veterans who are experiencing PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder).

He graduated from Seton Hall University in 1950 and completed his graduate studies at Mount St. Mary’s in 1954.

Bob was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, where he served on the destroyer USS Parker DD 604. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2006, USS Parker Association and the Meadville Management Association. In his earlier years, Bob served as a volunteer firefighter. Bob will be remembered as someone who spent most of his life dedicated to helping substance abusers. The most important things in his life were God, his family and helping people recover. He will be sadly missed.

In addition to his wife, Shawn, of 41 years, Bob is survived by his children, Alexander R. Pfleger and his wife, Amy, of San Diego, Calif., Anne K. Pfleger of Findlay, Ohio, Sarah E. Medvec and her husband, Tom, of Saegertown, and T.J. Pfleger and his wife, Aimee, of Marlborough, Mass.; and 10 grandchildren, Lee Lauer, Preston, Giselle and Silas Pfleger, Jullian, Ryan, Alyssa and Bailey Medvec, and Ethan and Meghan Pfleger.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a grandson, Thomas; a brother, John Pfleger, who was killed in action during WWII; and a sister and brother-in-law, Rita and Joe Henke.

Family and friends are invited to call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary of Grace Roman Catholic Church, 1085 Water St., Meadville, at 10 a.m. on Saturday, with Father Marc Solomon, pastor, as celebrant.

Interment with full military honors by VFW Post No. 2006 will take place in Cambridge Springs Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Saegertown Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 164, Saegertown, Pa. 16433; Catholic Social Services, 329 W. 10th St., Erie, Pa. 16502; or Meadville Community Theatre, P.O. Box 330, Meadville, Pa. 16335.
