SHARPSVILLE — Elizabeth Ann Schmidt of Sharpsville passed away at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, in the hospital of Sharon Regional Health System after a brief illness. She was 81.

Mrs. Schmidt was born Dec. 31, 1932, in Conneautville, a daughter of John Vendel Sr. and Mary Banko Vendel.

She was a 1950 graduate of the former Conneautville High School and worked briefly for the former A & P in Conneautville and later for the A & P in downtown Sharon. She married John (Jack) E. Schmidt on June 1, 1957, in St. Peter’s Church, Conneautville. Jack was an independent agent for State Farm Insurance and his wife, Elizabeth, was his office manager for more than 20 years.

Elizabeth was a member of the Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, working outside and gardening. She also loved going to the beach.

Surviving are her husband of 56 years, at home; a daughter, Susan Schmidt of Sharpsville; a sister, Margaret Toner of Meadville; a brother, John Vendel Jr. of Conneautville; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mary Ballas and Anna Vendel; and two brothers, Joseph and Albert Vendel.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to The Salvation Army, 660 Fisher Hill St., Sharon, Pa. 16146; or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday in the Church of Notre Dame, Hermitage, with Monsignor Edward J. Zeitler, senior associate, as celebrant.

Interment will be in Hillcrest Memorial Park, Hermitage.
