Gunnar O. Collins

PALATINE, Ill. — Gunnar O. Collins of Palatine, Ill., (formerly of Meadville), died Thursday, July 18, 2013, at the Lutheran Home Rehab center In Arlington Heights, Ill.

He was born in Meadville on Sept. 4, 1932, to Orval and Melba Fristrom Collins, and attended Crawford County Area Vocational Technical School and was a member of the Meadville High School varsity football squad that won the Section 2, District 10 Title in 1952. He graduated from Meadville High School, class of 1952, and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1952 (Korean War), achieved the rank of staff sergeant and received an honorable discharge in 1954.

Gunnar married Sue Grindrod in 1955. He received his journeyman plumbing license in Meadville through the L.L. Lord Plumbing Co. Following this, they moved to the Chicago, Ill., area of Palatine, where he eventually opened his own “Collins Backflow Specialists” Assoc. He was also past international president of the ASSE Plumbers Union. He was a member of the Methodist Church of Palatine.

He is survived by three sons, Gunnar, Michael and Patrick; the following grandchildren, Ashley Collins, Sean Collins, Steve Collins, David Collins and Cody Collins; a great-granddaughter, Siana Grace Collins; a sister, Barbara (Ray) White of Meadville; a niece, Pam Thomas, and a grandniece, Shannon Thomas, both of Mechanicshnrg. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Jane Grindrod Martin, and her son, Steven; and his close friend and caretaker, Shirley Broeske, of IIIinois.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Collins; and his parents.

As per his wishes, he was cremated and the family held a memorial for him at Ahlgrim’s Family Funeral Home in Palatine, with the Rev. Michael Morris officiating, on July 26.

His cremains will be interred at Greendale Cemetery in Meadville, to be announced at a later date.

Memorials may be made to the Crawford County Humane Society, 11012 Kennedy Hill Road, Meadville, Pa. 16335; or to a charity of one’s choice.
