Erma Jean Davis

MEADVILLE — Erma Jean Davis, 99, of Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community, 31 N. Park Ave., Meadville, formerly of Hadley and Otter Creek Township, died at 9:34 a.m. Thursday, June 13, 2013.

She was born in Pearl on May 25, 1914, a daughter of Edward O. and Myrtle (Wible) Hovis. She married John T. Davis on June 27, 1931. He preceded her in death July 20, 1991.

She was a member of Hadley Presbyterian Church and the Corner Class and Missionary Society. She was a former trustee and elder of the church.

During World War II, she kept the family farm going while John served overseas in the Army. After the war, they continued a cream business and built a milk house that operated until the early 1950s.

Jean worked in the early ’60s at the College Inn near Thiel College and later at the Commodore Perry School cafeteria for 12 years until she retired. She also collected wage taxes in Otter Creek Township for a number of years.

She was a member of the Hadley Presbyterian Quilters and Otter Creek Log Cabin Womens Sewing Group.

She served on the Commodore Perry School Board and as Judge of Elections for many years and as a member of the Mercer County Retired School employees. She loved baking, gardening, raising chickens, sewing clothes for her children, reupholstering furniture and quilting.

She survived through the Depression and never lost the work ethic from her life experiences.

She is survived by sons John (Jack) E. Davis and his wife, Joyce, of Poquoson, Va., and Timothy G. Davis and his wife, Kandy, of Meadville; brothers Richard Hovis and his wife, Kandy, of Meadville; grandchildren Mark, Jeff, Caleen and Michael; and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, Eddie, Blaine, Paul and Glenn; and sister, Isabelle Parker.

The funeral is Saturday at 3 p.m. with Rev. Onnalee Patterson, state supply minister of Sheakleyville, officiating, at Andrew J. Vana Funeral Home, 102 Church St., Hadley. Burial will be at Hadley Cemetery.

Calling hours are Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials can be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
