James W. Baird

HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mercer County — James W. Baird, 87, of 103 Maple Ave., Hempfield Township, passed away at 5 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, 2014 in St. Paul’s.

He was born Sept. 19, 1926, in Greenville, to W. Kenneth and Hazel (McQuiston) Baird.

He was a graduate of the former Penn High School, had attended Thiel College and was a graduate of the Cincinnati School of Embalming. He began working as a funeral director along side his father at W.K. Baird Funeral Home in Greenville, and from 1961 until his retirement in 1988 he was the owner/operator of James W. Baird Funeral Home in Jamestown.

For many years he was a member of the Mercer County Funeral Directors Association. He was also a member and past exalted ruler of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge 145, and was a member of Greenville Family Moose Center 276 and Greenville Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3374. A Mason, he was a member of Free and Accepted Masons Eureka Lodge 290, Mercer County Shrine and Zem Zem Shrine of Erie. Jim enjoyed traveling, especially his yearly trips to Williamsburg, and to the horse races in Lexington, Ky. He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

He married the former Linda L. (Pence) Wasser on June 5, 1995; she survives at home. Also surviving, a daughter, Martha A. Harbert of New York, N.Y.; two sons, James C. Baird and his wife, Cindy, of Jamestown, and Miles R. Baird of Indiana, Pa.; a stepdaughter, Lorraine McBride and her husband, Gary, of Meadville; three stepgrandchildren and three stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Mary Biga; and a brother, Richard G. Baird.

Public visitation will be held on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. in Loutzenhiser-Jordan Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 366-368 S. Main St., Greenville.

Private funeral services will be held on Tuesday in the funeral home, with the Rev. Philip J. Garner, pastor of Zion’s Reformed United Church of Christ, officiating.

Burial will be in Rocky Glen Cemetery, Adamsville.
