Carter N. Sherman

UNION CITY — Carter N. Sherman, 69, died Wednesday evening, Feb. 12, 2014, at his residence in Union City following a lengthy illness. He was born in Erie on Aug. 28, 1944, a son of the late Theodore N. Sherman and Martha Burlingham Scott. He lived in the Union City area most of his adult life.

He was a farmer most of his life, but he had also worked at Corry Ajax in Corry and helped move houses. He was an avid hunter, trapper and fisherman. Carter enjoyed drawing pictures and woodworking. Some of his woodworking projects were displayed at the Union City Public Library in 2013. He crafted jewelry boxes, picture frames and shadow boxes, which he gave as gifts to family and friends. He loved spending time at the Grange and with the Crawford County Coon Hunters.

Survivors include his companion of 21 years, Linda Haas; two sons, David Sherman of Albion and Jeffrey Sherman and his wife, Ashley, of Cambridge Springs; two daughters, Laurie Hicks and her husband, John, of Union City; and Theresa Simcheck and her husband, Steve, of Cambridge Springs; eight brothers, Theodore Williamson of Cambridge Springs, Leroy Sherman of Erie, Richard Sherman of Union City, Eugene Sherman of Centerville, Jerry Sherman and his wife, Sheryl, of Spartansburg, Edward Sherman of Centerville, David Sherman of Little Cooley and Patrick Scott of Erie; and five sisters, Geena Packo of Union City, Diann Daleski and her husband, Andy, of Erie, Shirley Peterson and her husband, Ernest, of Cambridge Springs, Betty Sherman of Centerville and Ruth Bond and her husband, Dalton, of Townville. Carter is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Shenna Hellyer, Alysha Brown, John Madison III, John and Elizabeth Hicks, Stephen and Zachary Simcheck, Dakota, Taylor, Madison and Kendall Sherman; four great-grandchildren, Steven Klakamp, Braxtyn, Bryce and Zoey Hellyer’ and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Ann Sherman; two brothers, Lee Burlingham and Paul Sherman; and two sisters, Sharon Powers and an infant sister.

Friends may call Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 8 p.m. at the C.S. Warthman Funeral Home Inc., 69 N. Main Street, Union City, with the service following at 8 p.m.

Private burial will be at the convenience of the family.
