Mary Elizabeth Phelan Turner of Pittsburgh died Thursday Jan. 30, 2014, at age 64 from complications of autoimmune hepatitis.
She was the beloved wife of H. Woodruff Turner; mother of James W. Turner (Monica) and David W. Turner (Melissa); grandmother of Ethan John Turner and Lillian Ada Turner; sister of Patricia Lang (Tom) of Saegertown and William J. Phelan Jr. of Los Angeles, Calif.; and daughter of the late Ada B. and William J. Phelan of Meadville; also survived by nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mary was a graduate of Allegheny College, where she served as president of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She was a past president of the Pittsburgh Opera Association and the Fox Chapel Opera Guild. She also was a past president of the parents’ associations of Fox Chapel Country Day School and Shady Side Academy and she served as a member of the Board of Trustees for each school. Mary was a former trustee of the Jane Holmes Residence, a member of the Fox Chapel Golf Club and a former member of the Twentieth Century Club, the Pittsburgh Field Club and the Kinder Garden Club.
Friends will be received at John A. Freyvogel Sons Inc., 4900 Centre Ave. at Devonshire Street, Pittsburgh, on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m.
The funeral will be Wednesday, Mass of Christian Burial, at St. Paul Cathedral at 10 a.m.
