MEADVILLE — Martha P. Thomas, 94, of Meadville and a resident of Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community since 2008, died there on Thursday, July 11, 2013.

Born in Cambridge Springs on Jan. 27, 1919, Martha was a daughter of Earl Gordon and Maude Cole Humes. She married James Rexford Turner on Nov. 24, 1935, and he preceded her in death on Dec. 24, 1966. She subsequently married Gerald W. Thomas on April 21, 1988, who preceded her in death on Aug. 22, 2009.

Martha, a homemaker at heart, enjoyed cooking and housekeeping and was an excellent pie baker and seamstress. A 1935 graduate of Richmond Township High School, she was a good pianist and served as accompanist to New Richmond Grange activities and the New Richmond High School Parents Teacher Association in her youth. She was a Girl Scout troop leader in the 1950s and worked as a receptionist in the late 1960s. For many years she was a member of Wesleyville Baptist Church, where she enjoyed teaching Sunday school and served as financial secretary.

She is survived by her son, Ronald Turner and his wife of Orlando, Fla.; her daughter, Karen Turner Roeper and her husband of Traverse City, Mich.; and her daughter-in-law, Marie Pilewski Turner of Erie. She also is survived by four grandchildren, Michael, Michelle and Melinda Turner, and Lauren Bracey Scheidt and her husband; and two nieces, Isabelle Humes Smith, and Dorothy Humes Dudenhaver and her husband.

In addition to her husbands and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Barry James Turner; two brothers, Tracey Earl Humes and Clarence Willard Humes; and two grandchildren, Mark and Matthew Turner.

Interment will be in Wintergreen Gorge Cemetery, 2601 Norcross Road, Erie, where a graveside service will be held in the chapel on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community, 31 Park Ave., Meadville, Pa. 16335.
