GREENSBORO, N.C. — Michael Wilson Runkel, 54, a resident of Greensboro passed away Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, at the Duke University Medical Center. Mr. Runkel was born June 15, 1959, in Grove City, the son of Arthur W. and Carol Wheeling Runkel.


Mike was employed with T.E. Connectivity in Greensboro until his health began to decline. Mike lived his life with passionate dedication to his family, friends and his beloved Pittsburgh Steelers. He was a member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge 219 in Meadville.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Carol W. Runkel Fritsma.

On March 28, 1997, he was married to Elizabeth Anne Sundberg, who survives of the home. Surviving in addition to his wife, Elizabeth, are two daughters, Kristin Runkel of Greensboro and Nicole Grumling and her fiancé, Erik, of Randleman; two sons, Jason Runkel and wife, Tiffany, of Titusville and Jason Grumling of Jacksonville, Fla.; his father, Art Runkel and stepmother, Barb, of Cochranton; his stepfather, Don Fritsma of Palm Bay, Fla.; two sisters, Sherry Maggio and husband, Chris, of Vienna, Va., and Debbie Deroy and husband, Mike, of Melbourne, Fla.; two brothers, Steve Runkel and his fiancé, Becky Hammonds, of New York City and Don Fritsma Jr. and his wife, Juanita, of Palm Bay, Fla.; and four grandchildren, Xander, Gabriel, Jaxon and Kathryn.

The family will receive friends at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel, 6000 High Point Road, Greensboro, on Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. A service to celebrate Mike’s life will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home Sedgefield Chapel conducted by the Pastor Andy Cook. Interment will follow in Guilford Memorial Park, Greensboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in Mike’s memory to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, 612 Pasteur Dr., Suite 409, Greensboro, N.C. 27403.
