Sam Edwards

MEADVILLE — Sam Edwards died at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community on Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013.

Samuel Kermit Edwards was born in 1919 in the Great Okefenokee Swamp in south Georgia, where his father worked for the Hebard Cypress Company. After three years the family moved to Brunswick, where Sam graduated from high school. In 1941 he took his A.B. from Emory University. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in England and France as an interpreter. He was no hunter and never owned a gun but had studied French while taking a degree in English literature. He served in quartermaster and supply and once jested that he came nearest to the field of action when he and Gen. Patton shared the same elevator in the Hotel George Cinq.

After the war Sam returned to England where he studied ancient history at Balliol College, Oxford (A.B., 1953, M.A., 1956). On his return to the states he taught for one year at Case Institute and eight years at Williams College, taking a second M.A. at Princeton (1960). In 1962 he came to Allegheny College where he finished his career, retiring in 1987 and continuing as a part-time professor of classics until 1995.

Sam’s field was ancient history and archeology and he taught all levels of Greek and Latin at Allegheny. His broad learning enabled him to teach in the college’s humanities courses and his easy manner, generosity and enthusiasm made him a popular instructor all his days. He was equally respected by his colleagues who elected him to Faculty Council and found him a congenial choice for a variety of committees.

He and his wife, Stella, traveled from Turkey to California and made friends wherever they went. They were devoted to classical music and seldom visited any place without attending theater, dance and opera. But Sam’s great love was gardening and he was often seen digging away in his garden the morning of their departure for France, England or Greece. He wore his learning lightly, was curious about all things human, never hurt any living thing and was cherished by all for his humanity, decency and good humor.

Sam’s friends are invited to a reception at Jim and Aurelia Hogan’s, 133 Park Ave., Meadville, from 3:30 to 5:30 on Dec. 14.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Hatheway-Tedesco Funeral Home & Crematory, 614 Baldwin St., Meadville.
