Anna Emma Gerlach of Palmyra died at home on Friday, April 18, 2014.
She was born in Philadelphia on Nov. 17, 1926, a daughter of Emma Edwards and Edward V. Edwards, and married Shirl L. Gerlach on Nov. 1, 1947. Shirl preceded her in death after 58 happy years of marriage.
Anna was an organizing member of Meadville’s People for Peace during the Vietnam War, and was a member of the Unitarian Universalist churches of Meadville and Harrisburg. She had a keen eye for beauty and served as home fashion designer at the J.H. Nunn Co. in Meadville.
Anna earned her undergraduate degree at Edinboro University. A skilled artist and quilter, her exquisite pieces reside in several private collections. She was an accomplished golfer and active in community affairs. Beloved friend of many, her inquisitiveness, kindness and adventurous spirit will be missed by all.
Survivors include Anna’s two sons, Robert Gerlach and Jonathan Gerlach; Jonathan’s wife, Mitzi; four grandchildren, Robert Freeman, Amy Gerlach, Joel Gerlach and Nova Gerlach; three great-grandchildren, Mary Freeman, Ella Freeman and Hope Freeman; a sister, Betty Nesse; a brother, Ed Edwards; and three nephews, David Bruno, Mike Morgan and Steve Edwards.
A private memorial celebration of her life will be held in November in Hershey.
The family suggests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Hospice of Central Pennsylvania, 1320 Linglestown Road, Harrisburg, Pa. 17110; or the charity of the donor’s choice.
