Luella Pope, 93, of 1207 W. 8th St., Erie, passed away Wednesday, Oct. 2, 2013, at home.
Luella was born in Como, Miss., on Nov. 2, 1919, a daughter of the late Elijah and Dora (Howard) Ramsey.
She married Thelma Pope; he preceded her in death.
The story of compassion, love, strength and victory was the life Luella lived. She accepted Christ at an early age and she was a faithful member of United Faith Fellowship Church of God, Meadville, for many years. She had also been a member of St. John Missionary Full Gospel Baptist Church, Meadville.
She was very well known in her community as Ms. Pope, Auntie and Ms. Luella, and most of us knew her as Momma.
She opened her home to many, always with great hospitality saying, “Come on in, sit down.” And, “Can I get you something to eat?” She loved children but had a special place in her heart for babies. She was a great cook, well known for her chicken and dressing and sweet tea.
Luella is survived by eight children, Eddie B. Mitchell and his wife, Erma, of Coldwater, Mass., Booker T. Pope of Columbus, Ohio, Truman Boyd and his wife, Mattie, of Meadville, Bobbie Hillard of Erie, who cared for her until God called her home, Albert C. Boyd of Erie, Bob Boyd and J. B. Boyd, both of Meadville, and Elijah Boyd and his wife, Theresa, of Erie; 47 grandchildren; more than 100 great-grandchildren; more than 50 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lady Mae Walker of Cleveland; and a host of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and her husband, Thelma, Luella was preceded in death by four children, Hubert Pope, J.Q. Pope, Mae Katherine Leverson and George Boyd Jr.; and seven brothers and sisters, Earnest Ramsey, Ozell Ramsey, Willie Ramsey, Van Ramsey, Ulyses Ramsey, E.V. Ramsey and Bessie Powell.
Family and friends are invited to call on Wednesday from 3 to 7 p.m. at Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville.
