MEADVILLE — Joseph Tomiczek, 89, of Meadville passed away peacefully Sunday, Sept. 29, 2013, at Meadville Medical Center surrounded by his loving family.

He was born Oct. 13, 1923, in Harmarville, a son of John and Anna Lance Tomiczek. He married Phyllis Crouch on Dec. 18, 1949; she survives.

Joseph attended Carnegie Mellon University and was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He worked as a plant chemist for 35 years at PPG before retiring in 1984.

Joseph was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006, Meadville, and a former member of Meadville Masonic Lodge 234. He enjoyed bowling, golfing and gardening. He was a loving husband and devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Survivors, in addition to his loving wife, Phyllis, of more than 63 years, include four daughters, Susan Zurney and her husband, Raymond, of Meadville, Nancy Myers and her husband, Robert, of New Kensington, Sally Wolff and her husband, Bradley, of Fairport, N.Y., and Melissa Clayton and her husband, Garry of Meadville; eight grandchildren, Sarah, Adam and Brian Zurney, Brandon Decker and his fiancée, Kelle Hufcut, Rachel Williamson and her husband, Timothy, and Abbey, Dorian and Hailey Wolff; a great-grandson, Damion Decker; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.

There are no calling hours.

A private family memorial service will be held at Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville, with the Rev. Benjamin Travis, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, officiating and military honors provided by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006, Meadville.

Interment will be in Greendale Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, 649 Park Ave., Meadville, Pa. 16335; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
