John Cholak

MEADVILLE — John Cholak, 90, of Meadville, passed away Monday, Dec. 3, 2012, at Rolling Fields Nursing Home, Conneautville.

He was born Aug. 28, 1922, in Timblin, a son of Jacob Cholak and Maria Scupek Cholak. He married Dorothy Krasa on Nov. 23, 1946; she survives.

John was a graduate of Punxsutawney High School and while in the navy he attended University of Houston located in Houston, Texas.

In 1942 John was employed as a meter reader for Penelec until he volunteered for duty with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He served with the Amphibious Forces in the Mediterranean. His shore duty included Mastagenem and Arzew in Algeria, North Africa; and Salerno, Naples and Rome in Italy. When the war ended, John was honorably discharged with the rank EM1C.

After serving his country, John returned to Meadville and began home studying electrical drafting on the G.I. Bill. Upon completion of the course, John was hired by Talon, where he worked in engineering as an electrical draftsman until his retirement.

John was a member of Saint Agatha Roman Catholic Church, where he served as an usher for many years. He was also a member of Meadville Elks Lodge 219 and a member of the Talon Golf League.

He enjoyed working in his vegetable garden, taking care of his fruit trees, working in the yard, hunting, fishing, working on engines and golfing.

When his sons were growing up, he loved spending time with them teaching them how to hunt and fish.

In addition to his loving wife, Dorothy, of 66 years, he is survived by four sons, John G. Cholak of Anchorage, Alaska, Thomas A. Cholak and his wife, Brenda, of Meadville, Dennis R. Cholak and his wife, Judy, of Edinboro, and David M. Cholak and his companion, Christina, of Conneautville; grandchildren, Andrea of Yuma, Ariz., Jacob and his wife, Emma, of Washington D.C., and Emily Jo of Edinboro; a sister, Ann Luketich and her husband, Frank, of Punxsutawney; two nieces, Kathy Kier and her husband, Larry, of Buena Vista, Colo., and Betsy Everhart and her husband, Karl, of Denver, Colo.; and a nephew, Jerry Cholak and his wife, Cathy, of Peoria, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Sam Cholak; two sisters, Mary and Kathryn; and a brother, Joe.

Family and friends are welcome to call on Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Roofner-Collins-Warren Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 544 Chestnut St., Meadville.

On Saturday, there will be an additional calling hour from 11 a.m. to noon with the funeral service to follow at noon at the funeral home, with Father Matthew Kujawinski, pastor of Saint Agatha Roman Catholic Church, officiating. Following the funeral service, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006 Color Guard will perform full military honors at the funeral home.

Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Harmonsburg.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, 1128 State St., Erie, Pa. 16501.

(Doodee) Onspaugh Loper and the late Robert E. Loper on Sept. 13, 1946, in Geneva. She married William Payne March 27, 1965. He survives.
