I. Steve Musiek

MEADVILLE — I. Steve Musiek of Meadville passed away Saturday, Aug. 17, 2013.

Born Feb. 13, 1931, near Brownsville, Steve was the eldest child of the late Steve F. and Nellie A. Musiek. On Dec. 27, 1956, Steve married Mary Lee, daughter of Frances and the late George Walford.

Steve graduated from Union City High School in 1948. He captained his high school football team and was named to the Erie County All-Star Team. As a middleweight boxer, he competed in the Golden Gloves and continued football and boxing after he entered the service. He was Armored Infantry Battalion middleweight champion.

A decorated veteran of the Korean War, Steve served 30 years in the military and reserves and retired as a lieutenant colonel.

Steve graduated from Alliance College and Edinboro University, where he obtained a master’s degree in guidance counseling. A devoted and motivating educator, he spent his entire 35-year career at Cambridge Springs High School.

He coached football for 13 years, starting at the junior high level and leading that team to an undefeated season. He went on to coach the high school team, where he achieved one of the best season records in the school’s history. However, he is perhaps best known for introducing progressive weight training to Crawford County and Cambridge Springs athletes. His life centered on physical fitness, winning numerous weightlifting and bodybuiding awards. In retirement he used his weightlifting expertise to help many adults and young athletes achieve their conditioning goals.

He was a member of the Military Officers Association, the Blue Badge Society, the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees and Greyhound Associations of Ohio, Pennsylvania and Florida.

Steve is survived by his wife; and two daughters, Annette (Steve) Hatch of Albuquerque, N.M., their children, Ellen, Maren and Craig Hatch; and Laurie Cammarata of Asheville, N.C., and sons, Anthony and Dominick Cammarata. He is also survived by three sisters, Eleanor Xapsos of Lockport, N.Y., Wanda Sherred of Seattle, and Clare Gangemi of Buffalo, N.Y.; two brothers, Joseph Musiek of Union City and Dr. Frank Musiek of Storrs, Conn.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be private and held at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions may be made to Greysave of Northwestern Pennsylvania, 711 Pinoak Drive, Erie, Pa. 16504; or the Crawford County Humane Society, 11012 Kennedy Hill Road, Meadville, Pa. 16335.

Arrangements are under the direction of Stephen P. Mizner Funeral Home & Cremation Services Inc., 404 Chestnut St., Meadville.
