MEADVILLE — Doris M. Dennis Roae Manuel, 94, of 10376 Circle West, Meadville, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014, at Rolling Fields Nursing Home, Conneautville.

She was born on Oct. 29, 1919, in Holidays Cove, W.Va. She was a daughter of Charles H. and Hallie Ruckman Dennis. She married Joseph J. (Dobie) Roae on Sept. 5, 1942, at St. Hippolyte Church in Frenchtown. He preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 1986. She later married Lawrence J. (Larry) Manuel on Aug. 21, 1990; he survives.

She was a graduate of Springfield Township High School in New Springfield, Ohio. She was a member of St. Hippolyte Church for 40 years, where she was a choir member, president of the Altar Rosary Society and a chicken dinner hostess. She was the captain of East Mead Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary in its early years, and was a partner in Roae’s Diner at the county fair, which was later sold and re-named the East Mead Diner.

Doris and Dobie operated the Frenchtown Auction and barn dance for many years and exported freight car loads of antiques throughout the USA to conduct auctions. They later developed Brookdale Mobile Home Park and Sales and Barney Acres. They developed Wayland Apartments and Brookdale Campground with their son, Roger, and also developed West Brookdale Park with their son, Chuck.

Doris wintered in Florida for more than 30 years with Dobie. In later years, Doris and Larry bought a mobile home in Florida and wintered there for 16 years. They learned line dancing in Florida and then taught it at the Active Aging Senior Center in Meadville for four years. This was the first line dancing in this area.

Her favorite activities were ballroom dancing, music, reading and politics, and she was an avid Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Doris loved her family dearly and also took in many foster children.

Survivors include three sons, Roger Roae and his wife, Marilynn, of Erie, Charles Roae and his wife, Terri, of California, and Michael Roae of Meadville; one daughter, Denise Schobel of California; and 12 grandchildren, David and state Rep. Bradley Roae, Sonya Nicholson, Renee, Rexford and Jonathan Roae, H. Walter III, Jeffrey, Bret and Rebecca Schobel, Joan Townsend and Sandy Roae. She is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; three stepchildren, Randy, Larry and Mark Manuel; four stepgrandchildren; seven stepgreat-grandchildren; and six foster children. She is also survived by a close foster daughter, Clara (Crissy) Householder.

In addition to her first husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Wilma Ferlin and Bertha Wentz; and two brothers, Carl and Thomas Dennis.

Family and friends are welcome to call today from 6 to 8 p.m. at Roofner-Collins-Warren Funeral Home and Cremation Services Inc., 544 Chestnut St., Meadville. A prayer vigil service will be held this evening at 7:45. An additional hour of calling will be Tuesday from 11 a.m. to noon at the funeral home.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday at 1 p.m. at St. Hippolyte Church in Frenchtown, with Father Daniel Prez, pastor, as celebrant.

Burial will take place in St. Hippolyte Cemetery.
