Richard E. Lawhead

COCHRANTON — Richard E. Lawhead, 85, of Cochranton died Thursday, April 18, 2013, at Wesbury Methodist Community following a period of declining health.

Born on March 12, 1928, in Marion, Ohio, he was the son of Stanley F. and Ruth E. Downs Lawhead. He married Vivian B. McCarl on Aug. 18, 1949, and she preceded him in death on Jan. 15, 2001. He subsequently married Kathleen Johnston on March 20, 2004; she survives.

He was a 1946 graduate of Cochranton High School and served with the U.S. Army/Air Force from June 1946 until honorably discharged in April 1949.

Returning from the service, he began his tool and die apprenticeship at Talon. In 1960, he was one of the original co-founders of Coinco Inc. in Cochranton.

He was a member of the Cochranton Presbyterian Church, the Model A Club, Pensy Prowlers Camping Club and he also served as the Cochranton Borough Mayor from 1992 to 2002.

Richard had a great devotion to the Masonic Lodge. In 1962, he became a master mason and joined the Cochranton Masonic Lodge 790, where he served as the Worshipful Master for three different terms. He was also proud of his service as the District 25 Deputy Grand Master from 1995 to 2001. He was a member of the Pennsylvania Grand Lodge and was a former member of the Erie Shrine.

Survivors include his children, Connie Jablonski and her husband, Jay, Linda Cokley and her husband, James, Karen Lemieux and her husband, Charles, and Cindy Bresee and her husband, Daniel, all of Cochranton; a step-son, Matthew Johnston and his wife, Lacie, of Howard; grandchildren, Lana Boozer and her husband, Robert, of Cochranton, John Bresee of Cochranton, James Cokley II and his wife, Amy, of Cochranton, Jason Bresee and his wife, Shanna, of Cochranton, Jill Lemieux of Meadville, Jenny McMann and her husband, Gary, of Cochranton, Christopher Jablonski and his wife, Jenn, of Orlando, Fla., Erin Honard and her husband, Chris, of Cochranton, Andrea Lemieux of Cochranton, Ben Lemieux and his wife, Hannah, of El Paso, Texas, and Stephen Jablonski of Florida; two step-grandchildren, Carter and Garrett Johnston of Howard; 18 great-grandchildren and three adopted grandchildren, Brady, Ciara and Brian Lemieux of Cochranton.

In addition to his wife, Vivian, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ellen Flickinger; and an adopted grandson, Alize Lemieux.

Friends will be received on Saturday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dickson Family Funeral Home Inc., 123 S. Franklin St., Cochranton. The funeral service will be on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. J Harvey Boal of the Cochranton Presbyterian Church officiating. There will be a Masonic Funeral on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will be in the Cochranton Cemetery, with military honors conducted by the Cochranton American Legion Post 836.

The family asks that memorials be made to the Cochranton Presbyterian Church, 109 Smith St.; the Cochranton Volunteer Fire Department, E. Adams St.; or to the National Kidney Foundation, 3109 Forbes Ave., Suite 101, Pittsburgh, Pa. 15213.
