Marie Frances Bortnick, 68, of 109 Parkway Drive, Conneautville, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, Nov. 17, 2013, at 6:15 a.m. She was at Suncoast Hospice in Clearwater, Fla., when she lost her battle with cancer.
She was born in Erie on Jan. 11, 1945, to James A. Bufalino and the late Frances P. Fasciana Bufalino. She married her high school sweetheart, James Bortnick Sr., who remained to this day the love of her life and her best friend, on July 24, 1965. They loved golfing together, playing cards, going to the racetrack, going on cruises and watching football, which included cheering on her Steelers. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, which she had a way of bringing together. She would organize family get-togethers that included food, fun and many volleyball games.
She was a health and physical education teacher for 33 years which concluded at Conneaut Valley High School, her own alma mater. She had many colleagues that she dearly loved. She was also a part owner of Bortnick Construction Inc. in Springboro.
In addition to her father and husband of 48 and one-half years, she is survived by her two children, Maryfran (Vincent) Powall of Lakewood, N.Y., and James (Debra) Bortnick Jr. of Meadville; three grandchildren, Sydney, Ryan and Mitchell Pascarella of Lakewood; and three granddogs. She is also survived by her sister, Carolyn (Nick) Giannakas, of Norwood, N.J.; her nephew, Corey Giannakas of Norwood; and four cousins, whom she was raised in the same house with, whom she considered more like brothers and sisters than cousins, Russell Bufalino, Jeanette (Mac) Fossett, Joseph Bufalino and Toni (Donald) Cipollo. She was also a beloved niece, cousin, sister-in-law, aunt, great-aunt and friend to many who loved and cherished her.
She was a strong, courageous woman who even in her final days showed her undying strength and courage. She was a blessing to our family and will be dearly missed.
The family will be welcoming family and friends at White-Cool Funeral Home and Funeral Director Gina M. McCauley at 1405 Main St., Conneautville, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday.
