Clifford D. Bortz, 82, of Meadville, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2008, at Meadville Medical Center.

He was born in Warren County Jan. 30, 1926, a son of Sylvester James and Sarah Hannah Johnson Bortz. He married Madeleine Cooper Nov. 11, 1966; she survives.

He was a foreman at Steel Car in Greenville until his retirement. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, serving from 1944 to 1946.

He enjoyed fishing. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006 and past president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Madeleine Bortz of Meadville; a stepdaughter, Betty Petruso and her husband, Sam, of Erie; two stepsons, Bill Cooper and his wife, Pat, of Conneaut, Ohio, and Donald A. Cooper of Meadville; three daughters, Debbie, Sandy and Toots, all of Greenville; several grandchildren; and a sister, Naomi Woods of Florida.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Arrangements will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
