Published June 28, 2009 01:06 am - Esther Helen Shumaker, 95, a former Saegertown resident, resident of Wesbury Hillside Home for four-and-a-half years, and a resident of Rolling Fields Nursing Home, Conneautville, for the past 13 months, died there Friday, June 26, 2009, after a period of declining health.

CONNEAUTVILLE — Esther Helen Shumaker, 95, a former Saegertown resident, resident of Wesbury Hillside Home for four-and-a-half years, and a resident of Rolling Fields Nursing Home, Conneautville, for the past 13 months, died there Friday, June 26, 2009, after a period of declining health.

She was born in Armstrong County, September 3, 1913, a daughter of Omar and Laura Stokes Adams. She married Wendell D. Shumaker on May 28, 1937, and he preceded her in death Sept. 27, 2008.

Esther was a homemaker and had been employed briefly for the G.C. Murphy Co. She was a very active member of New Beginnings Church of God, volunteering as a treasurer, Sunday school teacher, choir member and in several other areas. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, jigsaw puzzles, baking and she was known for her pies and cookies.

Survivors include two daughters, Joetta Knapp and her husband, Richard Sr., of Saegertown and Diane Rudler and her husband, Herbert, of Meadville; one son, Wayne Shumaker of Pagosa Springs, Colo.; five grandchildren, Richard Knapp Jr. and his wife, Mary, Shelly Coleman, Jody Knapp and his wife, Pam, Julie Shumaker and Eric Shumaker; 10 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Bruce Adams and Charles Adams.

Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. at Robert W. Waid Funeral Home, 581 Chestnut St., Meadville.

The funeral and committal service will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Temple Jarrell of New Beginnings Church of God, officiating.

Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.

Memorials may be made to New Beginnings Church of God, 13226 Leslie Road, Meadville, Pa. 16335.
