BRUNSWICK, Ga. — David E. Smith of Brunswick, Ga., left this world to be with his savior on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2008.

He was born Nov. 12, 1946, to Merle and Arlene Smith of Cambridge Springs, formerly of Dutchtown Road, Waterford.

He was a kind, loving son and husband. He tried to be friendly to all and helped anyone in any way he could.

His greatest enjoyment was fishing, gardening and spending time with family.

He spent 18 years serving in the U.S. Army, doing tours of duty in Fort Dix, N.J.; Fort Benjamin Harrison, Ind.; Alaska; Korea; Vietnam (two tours); Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Md.; Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; and Germany.

He married Christine Casper Dec. 29, 1990, and they moved to Brunswick in 1999. He was a member of Bible Baptist Church of Brunswick and enrolled in the Bible Baptist Institute, graduating June 1, 2003, with a degree of graduate theology. He was always praising God for everything he had and was.

He was proceeded in death by his paternal grandparents, Glenn and Lena Smith; maternal grandparents, George and Ida Jones; and two nephews.

Survivors include his wife, Christine, of 17 years, of Brunswick; a son and daughter and five grandchildren (whereabouts unknown) from a previous marriage; his parents, Merle and Arlene Smith of Cambridge Springs; two sisters, Coralynn McClune and her husband, Robert, of Cambridge Springs, and Karen Weiland and her husband, David, of Erie; foster twin brother and sister, Leo VanLuven and Leona Guisti; five dearly beloved foster grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, aunts and uncles; and a special pal, Redder, his dog. He will be sadly missed by family and friends.

Memorials may be sent to Bible Baptist Church, 500 Harry Dritters Blvd., Brunswick Ga. 31525.

The memorial service will be conducted May 17 at Millers Station United Methodist Church at 2 p.m., with a reception to follow in the Community Hall adjacent to the church.

God saw him getting tired/a cure not to be/so he put his arms around him/and whispered, “Come with me.”
