WEST MEAD TOWNSHIP — As municipal spring cleanup days begin to be announced, one Meadville-area township plans to continue providing electronics recycling and another does not.

West Mead Township supervisors approved May 18 and 19 as the township's spring cleanup days at Tuesday's supervisors meeting. Times are from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. May 18 and 7 to noon May 19 at the Crawford County Fairgrounds.

Residents will be able to recycle electronics on May 19 only at a cost. Township Secretary Jill Dunlap will obtain quotes from vendors that recycle electronics such as televisions, computers and other miscellaneous items.

"It doesn't cost the township anything," Dunlap said, but residents will pay the vendor directly for the service.

Dunlap will provide more details to supervisors about electronic recycling at the township's March meeting.

West Mead supervisors haven't discussed the discontinuation of the electronic recycling service, but that's not the case for Vernon Township. Vernon supervisors intend to no longer offer electronic recycling as part of the township's cleanup day, which this year is scheduled for 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 12.

Vernon Township offered electronic recycling for township residents at no cost with a limit of two items per load last year. The service cost the township about 58 cents per pound, which translates to about $5,000, township Manager Robert Horvat estimated.

Horvat said township leaders want to encourage residents to participate in the annual electronics recycling event that benefits the Meadville Area Recreation Complex.

Approximately 8,400 pounds of electronic waste was collected at the MARC recycling event in October, according to meeting minutes posted on French Creek Council of Governments website.

No date for the 2018 MARC recycling event has been published on the MARC website yet. Attempts to reach Jay Verno, chairman of the Meadville Area Recreation Authority, a voluntary board of directors that promotes the mission of the MARC, were not successful.
