VERNON TOWNSHIP — Vernon Township Police have released the names of those involved in a multi-vehicle crash on Route 322 that sent three people to an Erie hospital with multiple injuries.

James Karanicolas, 24, of Meadville, Jessica Dawson, 25, of Meadville, and Angela Williams, 36, of Meadville, all were sent to UPMC Hamot, the region’s trauma center in Erie, with multiple injuries, according to Vernon Township Police. Karanicolas sustained critical injuries and was flown by helicopter ambulance to UPMC Hamot, according to police. Dawson was a passenger in the Karanicolas vehicle, police said.

The fourth person involved in the crash, Theodore Hazelet, 61, of Saegertown, wasn’t injured, police said.

No information was being released on the condition of Karanicolas and Dawson at each family’s request, a UPMC Hamot nursing supervisor said Tuesday. Williams was listed in fair condition Tuesday, the supervisor said.

Vernon Township Police said the investigation into the 4:51 p.m. crash near the former Ponderosa restaurant site is ongoing and no charges have been filed.

According to police, Hazelet was driving east on Route 322 in a pickup truck when he lost control of the truck for an undetermined reason and it crossed into the westbound lanes of the highway.

Hazelet’s truck collided head on with a 2009 Saturn Vue, driven by Karanicolas, that was traveling in the left westbound lane, police said. The impact caused Hazelet’s truck to stop, facing east in the left westbound lane of the highway, and pushed Karanicolas’ vehicle into the right westbound lane, police said.

The rear of Karanicolas’ vehicle then was struck by a 2002 Jeep Cherokee driven by Williams, who was driving west in the right westbound lane, police said. That impacted pushed Karanicolas’ vehicle into the center of the westbound lanes while Williams’ vehicle was pushed off the right side of the road into a guardrail, police said.

The crash caused a major tie-up on routes 6, 19 and 322 for several hours Monday afternoon and evening as the road was closed between the intersections of Route 102 and 98. The scene was cleared just before 8:30 p.m. Monday.

Vernon Central and Vernon Township volunteer fire departments, Meadville Central Fire Department rescue unit, Meadville Area Ambulance Service, Conneaut Lake Area Ambulance Service, Pennsylvania State Police reconstruction team and Stat Medivac assisted Vernon Township Police at the scene.
