First major storm of winter hits hard

MEADVILLE — Depending on where you live in Crawford County, there may between 4 and 8 inches of snow on the ground when you wake up this morning — with more on the way, according to the National Weather Service.

Northwestern Pennsylvania remains under a lake effect snow watch through midnight, according to the National Weather Service’s Cleveland office.

Cold temperatures and snow made for slick road conditions Saturday afternoon with numerous trouble spots reported around the region.

Emergency radio traffic indicated that the Gable Hill area of Route 6/322 in Vernon Township was so slick around 5:10 p.m. that even a Pennsylvania Department of Transportation plow truck became stuck. The roadway was cleared about 6:20.

There were vehicles reported sliding on areas of Route 77 northeast of Meadville, Route 27 east of Meadville, and in Vernon Township on Route 98 north of Route 6/322, emergency radio traffic indicated.

There were no reports of major injuries in any of the accidents, according to Pennsylvania State Police.

The cold and snowy conditions are expected to continue through today with another 3 to 5 inches of snow forecast today and an additional 1 to 2 inches this evening.

As of Saturday night, the National Weather Service office in Cleveland had forecast a total snow accumulation from the storm of 8 to 15 inches with the heaviest snow forecast for the snowbelt areas of southern Erie and northern Crawford counties.

Winds are expected between 15 and 20 miles per hour today and 10 to 15 mph tonight.

The temperature will stay in the low 20s today and fall to around 15 tonight, according to the National Weather Service.
