New roof next for First District Elementary

MEADVILLE — After years of almost continuous construction as five elementary schools underwent renovations and expansions, Crawford Central School District started the 2012-13 school year absent the all-too-familiar sounds of tearing things down and building them up.

The post-construction quiet was broken during Crawford Central School Board’s recent work session when Dave Dickson, the district’s supervisor of buildings, grounds and transportation, announced that the time is rapidly approaching to replace 20,000 square feet of roof on First District Elementary School.

“Roof replacement was not part of the project at First District, Second District and East End,” Dickson told the Tribune, noting that there was supposedly about eight years of usable life left in the roof, prompting the decision to wait until after the warranty expired to go in and replace it. That was back in 2007.

“In the meantime, we put a lot of rooftop units and ductwork up on a portion of the roof,” Dickson.

Although roof replacement had never been seriously considered as part of the renovation, “that part of the roof should have been dealt with — but it wasn’t,” he added.

With plans calling for funding for the project to come from next year’s capital budget, Dickson is ready to begin the process of sending out for bids.

Asked about the condition of the other roofs, Dickson described First District as “in the most need.”

As part of the First District project, which began in 2009, a 19,200-square-foot annex was demolished, a 9,000-square-foot addition was constructed and 35,000 square feet of the original building was reused.
