How intergenerational service learning project began

MEADVILLE — Almost a year in the making, mentors and mentees in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mentoring Program have completed their intergenerational service learning project that involves writing about the lives of selected residents at Wesbury United Methodist Retirement Community.

Mentees, along with mentors and Bonner students from Allegheny College, went to Wesbury several Saturdays and participated in volunteer duties that included assisting in the dining room and interacting with the residents. Their special project was to interview selected residents about their life stories.

A mentee/mentor team, using a set of research-based questions they had to compile, interviewed the residents over a period of time. The first draft was written by the interview team and then reviewed by the process observer in the program. The next step was when the director met with Wesbury’s director of activities/volunteer services over the summer to complete the second draft. The final copies were then completed.

Residents who participated in the intergenerational project include Marjorie St. John, Robena Lawson (now deceased), Vinnie Petruso, Mary Reid and Edward Wagner. Reid’s profile is published in today’s Tribune. Biographies for the other are featured in the Tribune’s Active for Life section on Wednesday and in other editions of the Tribune’s Daily editions.
