Downtown concert series continues tonight

MEADVILLE — Meadville’s Downtown Summer Concert Series continues today at 7 p.m. around the Dexter A. Bulen Gazebo in Diamond Park with the gypsy-jazz stylings of Max Schang’s Hot Club Allegheny, a Sharon-based group.

Max Schang’s musical path has taken him through many transformations, including classical guitar, jazz, funk, gypsy-jazz as well as various styles of American blues. In 2002, he ventured to Paris and reconnected with the contemporary gypsy jazz scene before creating “Time Away,” a gypsy jazz CD with several original compositions. After 40 years of performing, in fall 2012, Schang released his third independent album, “Back Up Again,” which debuted on Roots Music Report National Charts at No. 28.

On June 1, Schang released “Live At Sprague’s,” which was recorded live at Sprague Farm & Brew Works, Venango, with Raeman Hanna (bass and vocals) and Steve McMurray (drums and percussion).

The Meadville Council on the Arts recommends that attendees bring a chair or blanket for maximum comfort. There will be family friendly activities during the concert, which is presented free and has a rain location at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 346 Chestnut St.

Meadville’s summer concert series is among the events that kick-off the Fourth of July weekend in Crawford County. Nearly everyone’s Independence Day favorite — fireworks — take place on Saturday at Conneaut Lake Park and Canadohta Lake, with a rain date on Sunday. All fireworks displays will begin at dusk, which is around 10 p.m.

The fireworks are part of Conneaut Lake Park’s four-day celebration, which includes music from numerous musical artists. Headlining the celebration are Rusted Root tonight and former Poison frontman Bret Michaels on Sunday.

Today is also Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s “Fish-for-Free” day, which allows everyone in the state to fish legally without a license. All other fishing regulations apply.
