Area under winter storm warning starting this morning

As much as a foot of snow may fall across region

MEADVILLE — A powerful but fast moving storm could dump as much as a foot of snow in the region, creating a winter storm warning for Crawford and Erie counties starting in the pre-dawn hours today, according to the National Weather Service.

A winter storm warning is in effect for Crawford and Erie counties from today at 6 a.m. to Thursday at 2 a.m., according to the National Weather Service Office in Cleveland.

Tuesday’s temperatures in the 50s may seem like a distant memory by early Thursday morning as the temperature will dip to about 4 degrees by then. The wind chill value will be as low as minus 9 due to winds, according to the National Weather Service.

What’s set to cause the big change is a low pressure system moving through the area. It was expected to trigger rain early today, according to the National Weather Service.

A rain and snow mix is expected to happen today around 10 a.m., then snow, possibly mixed with freezing rain and sleet between 10 a.m. and noon, before turning to snow around noon.

There is a 100 percent chance of precipitation today with about 3 to 7 inches of snow forecast for Meadville, the NWS reported.

The snow is forecast to continue tonight with areas of blowing snow and another 2 to 4 inches of accumulation by early Thursday morning. Winds will continue to be gusty in the range of 15 to 20 mph with gusts up to about 35 mph.
