A program named “Pass It On” makes donated refurbished medical equipment available to people in the Crawford County area who lack the insurance coverage or means to buy medical equipment.
The program also educates individuals and their family members about other community-based resources that can address specific needs. Among the pieces of equipment the program supplies are wheelchairs; canes; walkers; crutches; and bathroom equipment, including tub benches, shower chairs and potty chairs.
The Medical Equipment Recycling Program is a project operated by Community Health Services Inc., a subsidiary of Meadville Medical Center, according to Duane Koller, spokesperson for the program and director of community support for Community Health Services Inc.
The Pass It On program accepts donated medical equipment from area residents who no longer need the items or from organizations that have collected them, according to Loren Little, referral coordinator at Hospice of Crawford County Inc. and a member of the committee to create the Pass It On program.
Hospice and the Meadville Area Free Clinic are two of the organizations that receive used medical equipment. Volunteers help to clean, repair and refurbish the devices. After a final inspection by a qualified volunteer, the equipment is available for loan to people in need. Those receiving the equipment can be given instruction on fitting and proper use, when needed.
The Pass It On program receives assistance from the Senior Community Service program. In addition to cleaning and repairing equipment, volunteers provide office support to coordinate the program and make the pieces of equipment available to those who need them.
For those who own medical equipment that is no longer used, they may donate it to the Pass It On Medical Equipment Recycling Program. The program will also accept cash donations to help purchase necessary equipment and supplies. The program is headquartered at the 505 Poplar St., Medical Arts Building, office PG-03 on the ground floor.
